Astral started as a small group of designers working in London’s theatres, T.V. and events industry, it quickly outgrew several premises in London and in 2000 moved to larger premises in Medway, Kent. Since humble beginnings the company has developed into a cohesive production and lighting organisation. Our work is spread across the country and often takes us abroad with our clients. We have a passion for what we do and at all times encourage creativity in our clients.

After an illustrious and award winning career in London theatre and as a touring lighting designer James moved on to work as a freelance operator and programmer during the 90’s and worked with top Brit pop bands and leading T.V shows of the day, including Oasis, TFI Friday, Saturday Night Live. The next obvious move was then to buy equipment, so armed with two sixty’s projection shows, a cluster of Clay Paki super scans and a Whole Hog One desk James formed Astral Projection. Several seasons on the festival and live music circuit then followed, eventually stock grew and the premises needed to enlarge so the company evolved into Astral Design and bought the current premises in Medway, Kent. From the new Medway base Astral Design reached out into the corporate world, lighting many West End award shows and conferences whilst the festival side of the business invested in three outdoor stage covers. Astral is currently run and manned by a consortium of lighting designers which was the original intention. James Waudby now works as creative director and consults on lighting projects both in the U.K and abroad.
